Winter Mountaincraft Courses

Every course is personalised according to
your experience and what you wish to learn. All course dates and locations are agreed
in discussion with you.

This season Scottish Winter Courses were available throughout February and March and based around Fort William. This enabled the best use of the weather and snow conditions and allowed us to visit iconic locations such as Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, Crag Meagaidh and the Cairngorms.

Winter skills
The transition from summer to winter can be daunting and have potentially serious consequences if undertaken incorrectly. Take this opportunity to learn and develop your personal winter skills on this course.
Either over 2 days or 5 (once again the choice is yours), this suitably intensive course will cover areas such as ice axe and crampon skills, route choice, navigation, personal equipment, snow and weather conditions. A definite opportunity to learn lots of essential skills.
Instructor/client ratio: 1:1 > 1:6

Further Winter Skills
An ideal 'next step' for those having completed the Winter Skills
course or just want something more adventurous. Further winter skills (such as emergency procedures and shelters, avalanche awareness, developing personal organisation and navigation for extreme weather) experienced each and every day, as well as fulfilling many personal challenges by tackling Highland munros or Lakeland summits.
Instructor/client ratio: 1:1 > 1:6

Winter Mountaineering
Is there such a thing as winter walking? Many of the routes up Scotland’s summits can only be described as mountaineering and this course will enable you to learn winter skills such as snow belays, rope work, avalanche awareness and climbing steep snow slopes. These skills are especially needed when undertaking classic routes such as Carn Mor Dearg and No.4 Gully up to the Ben summit or Broad Gully in Stob Coire nan Lochan or the East Ridge of Beinn a chorainn. All impressive, all memorable, all achievable by you.
Instructor/client ratio: 1:1 > 1:4

Snow-holing
Your gloves and jacket are frozen.
The wind is stinging your face.
You are wearing everything you own and you are still cold.
You want to get out of this white-out.
Well you can!
Snow holing can provide some of the cosiest and indeed most surreal feelings money can buy.
Learn the tricks of the trade that will make you realise those alleged snow-hole horror stories are unfounded.
