Winter Mountaineering Kit list

Wear
O
Walking Boots - Solid boot e.g. La Sportiva Nepal Extreame, Scarpa Cumbre or Vegas.
 
O
Gaitors - Essential in winter.
 
O
Trousers / Salopettes- Any man made or woollen material - not cotton.
 
O
Base Layer - Wicking/thermal man made fabric or wool.
 
O
Warm Layers - Any man made or woollen material - not cotton.
Carry
O
Rucsac - Approx 55 litres and with waterproof liner.
  O Waterproof jacket and trousers - Breathable and sturdy fabric. Hood must fit over helmet. Trousers with side or knee length zips. Bring old/throw away jacket and trousers for ice axe arresting.
 
O
Spare warm layers - Any man made or woollen material - not cotton.
 
O
Warm hat/balaclava - Bring 2. Can loose up to 40% of body heat through your head.
  O Neck gaitor / Scarf - Often overlooked, but when the spindrift is blowing...
 
O
Waterproof gloves/mitts - 2 pairs for the snow, 1 light/windproof pair for the walk-in.
  O Vacuum flask - 1 litre.
 
O
Water bottle - 1 litre. Pop bottles are indestructable .
 
O
Lunch - Plus spare food. High carb.
 
O
Torch - A headtorch is best along with spare batteries and bulb.
 
O
Map and Compass - For Scotland either O.S. 1:50 000 Sheet 41 (Ben Nevis) or Sheet 36 (Cairngorm). Even if laminated, carry in waterproof bag .
 
O
Sunglasses, Sun cream / Lip salve - Even in this country!
  O Ski gloggles - Essential in winter. Even a basic pair can make the difference.
 
O
Personal first aid kit - To include: Whistle. Personnal medication. 1 X-Large wound dressing. 1 Triangular bandage. Pain killers. Duct tape. Plasters / Mellolin pads for blisters.
  O Emergency survival bag - 6' x 3' orange poly bag.
Gear
O
 Helmet - Adjustable hard shell e.g. Petzl Elios or Ecrin, Black Diamond Half Dome .
 
O
 Crampons - 12 point, semi-rigid with anti-balling plates. Ensure excellent fit with boots.
 
O
 Ice axe - 50-55cm walking / mountaineering axe with classic curve pick.
